Situation

Safe and secure habitat for orangutans (wild and ex-captive) is increasingly being lost and is the greatest threat to the survival of this endangered great ape. Until recently the Lamandau River Wildlife Reserve was subject to significant levels of illegal activities, including illegal logging, oil palm expansion and outbreaks of fire. Greater involvement of all stakeholders for the future management of the area needs to be a priority.

Solution

This project will offer protection to the forests and orangutans within the reserve through patrols, fire prevention strategies and by providing monitoring and veterinary care. It will build on past successful initiatives and bring together the key stakeholders (villages, local government, local industry etc), who are involved in the future management of the reserve.
