Steps2Recovery is piloting an Abstinence-Based Restart Programme for ex-offenders. We aim to break the chains of addiction that lead back to prison. Our Big Idea is to set up a residential halfway house where we offer intensive support to our clients, with positive results for them and our society.

    Situation

Substance use and re-offending are related processes which can be anticipated and avoided. There are few community services that support ongoing recovery for ex-offenders. This results in a high level of relapse and consequent recidivism. A re-offending ex-prisoner costs the criminal justice system around £65,000 annually. These individuals are often vulnerable people with poor life skills who need substantial, intensive support to face difficult pasts and change their current lifestyle choices.

    Solution

Our programme, for ex-offenders with drug and alcohol problems, provides a well-managed and proven path to recovery. It includes structured, professional support to the individual plus community-based 12 step meeting attendance. We work with housing and other organisations with similar aims to ours to offer clients a long term solution that strengthens stability in their personal lives and guides them to take responsibility for their own housing, education, employment and social support needs.
