The young people and families cultural programme

Our new Programme will offer arts and cultural activities for local young people and families in Westbourne, the second most deprived ward in London. The connection between wellbeing and arts and culture has been clearly proved, and such free or affordable provision is desperately lacking here.

Location

Situation

Families in the surrounding tower blocks, many of whom are new arrivals and refugees, dread their children being drawn into London’s knife/drugs/gang culture. Their youngsters have nowhere safe nearby to spend their free time and access free or affordable arts, music or cultural pursuits. Our project will provide a safe place to explore new interests and activities, opening young minds, strengthening social ties between different ethnic and cultural groups and building confidence.

Solution

After consultation with young people and families from the local community we have developed a broad programme of activities (see below) that will engage, develop and, we hope, open the door to future passions. Introducing them to new cultural and economic opportunities can be life-changing, opening up a path to more formal learning and unthought-of career opportunities.
