Classical forms the bedrock of much modern art and literature, theatre, visual arts, film and pop culture. Yet 75% of state school pupils have no access to studying Classics at school, leading to great inequality in education. Schools in the North East and Midlands are at a particular disadvantage with little Classics on offer. We aim to narrow this gap by introducing Classics on the curriculum in 72 schools in these areas over the next three years.
We will introduce 3,600+ pupils to the joys of Classics, and inspire 144 state school teachers to teach Classics in schools themselves following sessions of lively training. We will stimulate interest in the ancient world through flexible courses with teachers alongside talks and enrichment days for pupils. In each region Classics for All will build partnerships between schools, local universities and other classical bodies, creating opportunities for pupils and teachers to access support.
