Young people in Soweto have few opportunities to make music, and even fewer opportunities for constructive learning outside school time. In an area of social deprivation, it is easy for them to slide into drug and alcohol abuse.
The Buskaid Music School gives around 80 young people from Soweto the chance to engage in a constructive activity by learning the violin, viola, cello or double bass. Whether they go on to pursue a career in music, or in something completely different, Buskaid introduces them to the discipline of learning an instrument, and provides an activity for them to take part in after school and at weekends.
