This campaign has now closed

The Bowes Museum has just had a new library, archive and reading room space added as part of its redevelopment. We want to make this collection as accessible as possible which involves the cataloguing of collections and training of volunteers to make this facility available to visitors.

    Situation

The Museum has brought its various archive and book collections together to fit in these new spaces for the first time. As they have previously been inaccessible in the large part, they need to be properly catalogued and sometimes translated in order that their local, national or international significance is understood and communicated. The collection needs staff to make the ‘Reading Room’ available to visitors and the local community and to introduce an online, electronic database.

    Solution

The Museum has money pledged by its Friends to expand areas of need within this collection. The Museum would like to receive funding for an archivist one day / week. The archivist would help identify areas of need, train volunteers to run the ‘Reading Room’ for visitors, oversee the development of cataloguing and the introduction of an online database. The archivist will help volunteers to understand the cataloguing database so that this grows and can be used online in the future.
