This will be our contribution to the West Midlands Cultural Olympiad celebrations in 2011 - highlighting the role science and sport plays in our lives with lively & interactive exhibitions. It will also mark Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site's 25th anniversary and feature community involvement.

    Situation

Shropshire is a rural county with few big exhibition spaces or opportunities for people to become involved in Cultural Olympiad activities. It is home to Much Wenlock whose role in the modern day Olympic movement is widely recognised but there is a perception that the Olympic activities are London-based & people of the West Midlands feel disconnected with events. The Museum launched the West Midlands Cultural Olympiad in 2008 & we aim to encourage more community involvement through this festival

    Solution

We will stage the interactive Science of Sport Exhibition at our Design and Technology Centre, Enginuity; a Sporting Life Exhibition at Coalbrookdale & at Blists Hill Victorian Town we will hold a Victorian version of the famous Community Games which started in Much Wenlock. Plus, we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Ironbridge becoming a World Heritage Site. A community exhibition will have input from supporters, local residents and groups celebrating the past, present & future of the WHS.
