MaAfrika Tikkun’s Youth Football Programme will build on the success of our Sports Programme to support 750 young people in five impoverished communities in South Africa. We will use football to engage positively with young people to help fight poverty, crime and violence and improve lives.

Situation
The communities in which the Youth Football Programme will operate are government resettlement areas that are characterised by poor infrastructure, high unemployment, high incidence of disease, especially HIV/AIDS, and extreme poverty. Typically household income is under £70 a month. Family structures are fragmented and at least one in three families has experienced the impact of HIV/AIDS. The youth often turn to gang membership, violence and drugs as an escape from their troubles.
Solution
We will use the power and influence of football as a tool to engage young people and to address social issues such as education and general life skills. The Youth Football Programme provides developmental activities in safe and secure enviroments as an alternative to the crime and gang culture that many young South Africans get involved in. The activities develop team work, leadership and organisational skill as well as confidence, determination and a sense of achievement.
