Situation

With youth unemployment over 12%, getting a job is a major hurdle for too many young people. Barriers are greater for the 3.9 million young people in the UK who are living in poverty, have language barriers, are homeless, in care or looking after relatives. Employers have high expectations of young people's employability skills but only 22% currently offer work placements. Every young person, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves to have opportunities to develop these skills.

Solution

Our Future is a 6 month work experience and skills programme aimed at helping young people, aged 16-19, make a smooth transition from education into work. Our Future is structured to create local career awareness, provide employability training and offer paid work experience. It includes networking with local employers who have job vacancies, mentoring, skills development and alumni events. It is tailored to the needs of employers and young people; aiming to be a bridge between these two groups.

  • 'I wanted to take part in the Our Future programme mainly because teachers at my school told me that I wouldn‚Äôt be able to pass my GCSEs but the Our Future programme was promoting something different. Being on the programme is part of the reason why I‚Äôve been able to achieve so much education-wise.'

    — Hodan - Our Future London 2015

  • 'The induction week has been very life changing, it has changed the way I view things...I feel like I can achieve anything if I put my head to it. One of my main objectives I wanted to accomplish was to speak confidently in front of people and I have managed to achieve that thanks to the programme.'
