Changing the Game for Young People In London

We want to use sport to engage young people from the most deprived areas in London. We will place inspirational sports coaches into schools to deliver full-time extracurricular programmes that empower and inspire young people aged 11-18 growing up in disadvantage to reach their potential.

Situation

We work with young people from low economic backgrounds because they: • Have poorer educational outcomes including higher rates of absenteeism and exclusion and lower levels of academic achievement; • Have fewer opportunities to develop their social, emotional and cognitive skills; • Are at greater risk of suffering from mental health issues; • Have fewer opportunities to participate in sport and are far more likely to lead inactive lifestyles.

Solution

High quality sports coaching will address these disadvantages by providing role-models, and safe, structured activities that can be difficult to find in areas of deprivation. Our coaches mentor participants full-time throughout the school term and in the holidays to develop skills including confidence and determination. We employ activities that are structured and purposeful – which are important in a young person’s development, both mentally and physically.
