To provide clean drinking water for the first time to disadvantaged women, children, disabled and other people in a village in one of the poorest countries in Africa. Alongside this, the project will improve health and equality of the people and ensure sustainability of the facilities we provide.

    Situation

The project aims to reduce mortality and ill health caused by dirty water. Every year in Guinea Bissau, for every 10 children, two do not live longer than five years. This is primarily due to diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and malaria. Many also die from malnutrition. They typically have to walk over 3 miles for dirty water and spend 4-5 hours a day in doing this. They have no healthy food and rely on root vegetables. Villagers have no health centre, nor even proper roads to reach one.

    Solution

Water changes life. We will be providing water points within 500 meters of every household in the village, providing them good access to clean water. We will construct latrines and provide a comprehensive health promotion programme. We will also work with women in developing market gardens to grow their vegetables and we also run targeted equality workshops, to encourage women to take an active role within the community. We will work with the people to draw up plans to sustain the facilities.
