Smokeless stoves save lives!

In Kenya, many people cook indoors over an open fire. The house fills with smoke, causing lung diseases and eye infections. Our simple, cheap smokeless stoves solve the problem and keep mums and children healthy. We will train local people to build and install the stoves, saving lives.

Situation

Peole in rural Kenya often cook indoors over an open fire. The resulting smoke causes deadly diseases including pneumonia and COPD, and children can go blind from the eye infections caused by smoke. Women suffer in particular as they are usually in charge of cooking. The cooking fires are also very inefficient, costing families a huge amount in fuel, and women and children waste much time fetching the wood each day. The destruction of forest for firewood also damages the environment.

Solution

A simple brick built stove, with a metal chimney, solves the problem of domestic smoke. It can be made from local materials and installed in 3 hours. We'll train 25 local men and women to build and install the stoves in a week long course in Kenya, and will give each of them a demonstration model; we will also pay for stoves to be installed in the homes of 100 vulnerable families. The stoves produce a marked improvement in family health, and use 35% less wood, saving the family time and money.

  • I was earning $2 a day and spending $1 of it on firewood. Now I spend only half as much!

  • We call the stove the three hour miracle - it only took three hours to install in my house and it made everything better!
