Situation

Disabled children in Kenya are among the most marginalised group in society. The vast majority don't attend school and are kept at home, hidden from public view. Vision Africa has supported the establishment of two specialist schools for children with complex disabilities in rural Kenya. One of the schools, Kirunguru Special School, is on a steep, sloping site and is across multiple levels meaning it is inaccessible to the children with limited mobility, or those in wheelchairs.

Solution

Following consultation with the children and their teachers and parents, we plan to landscape the play ground/garden area at the school to make it a safe and accessible space for all the children to freely enjoy. We also plan to include some accessible play equipment for the children to encourage imaginative play. We will make improvements to the overall accessibility of the school itself, adding wheelchair ramps and hand bars to allow the children to freely and safely move around the school.
