Most heart children have to make regular visits to hospital for blood tests to measure the thickness of their blood. These regular visits not only interrupt schooling but often force parents to take time off work, which can lead to a reduction in pay. They often also cause childcare issues for brothers and sisters of school age.
Through the provision of INR machines, a child can use a simple procedure to test their blood at home, contrasted with a needle being used to take blood at hospital. INR machines measure the thickness of blood. If the blood is too thick there is a danger of blood clots which can cause strokes, but if the blood is too thin there is a risk of internal bleeding. The machines are provided by the CHF as part of a package that includes training and guidance from a doctor or Cardiac Liaison Nurse.
