We think older people suffering from memory loss, isolation & loneliness should have the same access to art as anyone. Creating New Memories builds on our work with older people, aiming to offer the well-reported benefits that those living with loneliness gain from social and creative interaction

Situation

Over 9,000 people in Cornwall live with dementia and 1 in 3 over 75s experience loneliness and isolation. (Cox Report) There are few dementia-friendly spaces and opportunities for older people with memory loss & their carers to benefit from social and creative interaction in a friendly environment. We have placed artists in carehomes since2016 and agree with Age UK on the benefits art bring in prompting memories and wellbeing, and are well placed to move this work forward.

Solution

We will create a dementia and age-friendly resource using the expertise of dementia care organisations and our own experience of supporting sufferers. We will provide creative interaction and appropriate facilities within the welcome of a public gallery. We aim to establish the regular social and creative sessions that older people are asking for in a safe and supportive environment. Funding through this campaign will ensure the activity becomes a sustainable part of our future work.
