    Situation

In Russia there is still limited understanding of and resources for disabled children and their families. Education is difficult to access, finance is hard to secure and a lack of professionals with skills to support the families mean they often have to travel many hours for help and advice. Families feel isolated; fathers may leave forcing the mother to return to her parents for assistance in looking after the child. The whole system can cause extreme isolation and depression.

    Solution

By training more people in Portage delivery and supporting the formation of new teams of Portage workers, ThePromise are able to ensure Portage is available to more disabled children in their homes. Working with their parents, the children will develop skills that will enable them to attend special schools and play their part in family life. The links created by the Portage teams allows parents to meet and talk and their children to make friends reducing the isolation of both parents and child
