ZOA-UK will work with 3 impoverished communities to help them to educate and feed orphans and vulnerable children at community schools. Without this support the poorest children would not be able to go to school and some will lack the food they need to keep them healthy.

Situation

Zambia has 1.2m orphans and vulnerable children, largely due to AIDS. The country is struggling to cope, and as a result, the families of many of the poorest children cannot afford to send them to school or feed them enough to meet their needs. Although the Government is committed to making education accessible, it lacks the funds to pay for it so schools charge fees which the poorest cannot afford - consequently too many children are out of school and at increased risk of abuse.

Solution

We will partner with 3 schools set up by communities to help the most disadvantaged students to access education. ZOA-UK will fund tuition and exam fees, uniforms, books, stationery and transport, where necessary. We will fund school meals too, as no one can learn if they are hungry. Regular home and school visits will ensure that any social and cultural pressures that affect the children’s ability to attend or progress in school are identified and addressed.
