In Malawi over three quarters of pre-schools have no access to safe water or sanitation. 18% of deaths amongst children under 5 are caused by diarrhoea, principally arising from drinking and using contaminated water. Children suffering from diarrhoea and malnutrition are much more susceptible to suffering from other diseases such as malaria and measles. These factors conspire to keep many children away from school to the detriment of their education.

This project will provide a pre-school and wider community in Malawi with access to safe water, child-friendly toilets and lead a process of hygiene behaviour change. With water close at hand, the school can establish kitchen gardens and improve nutrition for the children. Healthy and engaged children will take home what they have learnt to their siblings. Regular attendance at a pre-school will radically enhance children’s life chances whilst delivering long-term change for entire communities.
