CLEAR International

Access to Justice for all

Where justice is bought, not accessed, CLEAR offers a lifeline to many in need of legal advice, providing free legal education workshops and representation. This enables prisoners to understand court process and self-represent, children are engaged about their rights and widows have land returned.

In East Africa, fair application of the law comes at a price. The poor and marginalised end up as victims within the system with no resources or understanding of how to tackle the injustice. Remand times in some Kenyan prisons are between 3 and 5 years and many don't even know the charge they face; widows are evicted from land rightfully theirs by relatives; many children receive no financial support from estranged parents. Each of these lack access to justice.

CLEAR partners with local Christian lawyers who use their skills and experience to equip those suffering injustice with tools to speak up for themselves, and for the most vulnerable to advocate on their behalf. As a result of regular legal education workshops, in some prison areas, remand times (pre-trial) have dropped to as low as 18 months. By providing legal expertise and knowledge, CLEAR can and does make a difference in the lives of individuals and their families.
