Meningitis can affect anyone, of any age. The disease can kill within hours and for those who survive, the physical and emotional aftermath can be devastating and lifelong. Through this project we aim to empower families with the resources they need to rebuild positive futures after meningitis.

Situation
1 in 3 people who survive bacterial meningitis and associated septicaemia can be left with life altering after-effects, such as hearing loss, amputations and brain injury. Our research with 1000+ people affected by meningitis found that 9 in 10 people living with after-effects experience mental health issues. People may no longer be able to work due to their after-effects or parents may no longer be able to work due to their child’s care needs after meningitis – creating financial pressures.
Solution
Our Rebuilding Futures Fund allows people to apply for funding from Meningitis Now to pay for emotional support such as counselling or creative therapies. In 2019, families will also be able to apply for practical items to help ease the financial and practical pressures that meningitis leaves behind. This may include, for example, mobility and specialist equipment, training, hearing therapy and costs associated with funerals or travelling to medical appointments.
