The Mango Tree Orphan Support Programme

Girls for The Future

Our project supports orphaned girls and young women to remain in primary and secondary school by breaking down the barriers which prevent them from getting an education. We provide educational bursaries, extra tuition, sexual health education and reliable access to re-usable sanitary towels.

In Kenya 13,000 girls drop out of school every year due to teenage pregnancy. In Homa Bay County where we work, the overall educational dropout rate amongst orphaned girls is 20%. Secondary enrolment rates are also low for orphaned children, especially for girls, with only 15% of the total secondary school age population enrolling. Teenage pregnancy, early marriage, and under-prioritisation of girls’ education are serious problems and HIV prevalence in Homa Bay County is still over 25%.

We will provide educational bursaries for orphaned girls at primary and secondary school as well as providing them with extra tuition during the holidays (football, basketball, athletics, dance, drama and music). The project will also improve their sexual and reproductive health and rights through seminars and workshops in schools. We will provide family-based foster care for particularly vulnerable orphan girls and ensure all young women have sustainable access to re-usable sanitary towels.
