    Situation

Oxford is often presented as the city of “dreaming spires”, but in reality, there are significant pockets of deprivation. In parts of east and south east Oxford and in outlying estates like Barton, Risinghurst, Rose Hill and Blackbird Leys, unemployment, poor housing and inadequate facilities, fragmenting families and high crime rates mean that many are severely disadvantaged. It is often the young ethnic communities who suffer most.

    Solution

HSS’s primary aim is to give as many young athletes as possible the opportunity to try the sport of rowing and sculling. The Club welcomes young people from all backgrounds, irrespective of ability to pay. The only prerequisite is that athletes must be able to prove that they can swim a minimum of 100 meters in basic rowing kit. Young sportspeople develop self-belief, resilience and the ability to solve problems and develop vision. Sport is a critical factor for educational success.
