Birth registration is routine in the developed world. In developing nations it is uncommon, but remains the only means to economic development and access to personal rights. Record !t will be distributed in Africa with the aid of local NGOs to educate women about the importance of birth registration

    Situation

Our project addresses the lack of birth registration in East Africa and the ensuing difficulties it creates in the lives of women and their children. When a parent dies, women and children can lose their homes as they are unable to fight challenges to home ownership.Though less than 50% of births are registered in Africa, registration can keep families together, especially amidst the AIDS epidemic. Proof of age is further important when children seek work or when young rape victims seek justice.

    Solution

Record !t illustrates the impact of birth registration in the accessible and concentrated form of a board game. The game creates a real sense of loss in the player when they do not register a birth. In the game, as in life, lack of registration leads to lost economic opportunities, forfeited chances to social and professional advancement, and other obstacles. This strong sense of loss communicates the importance of registration before these women are confronted with the same choices in real life.
