The Passage believes in a hand up rather than a hand out and much effort is made to enable each homeless person visiting the day centre to take as much responsibility for improving their own circumstances as possible. A key factor within this is the work of the financial inclusion team.

    Situation

Helping homeless people to overcome the barrier to returning to work because of the multiple barrier they experience. Lack of recently practised skills, lack of experience of seeking work, lack of confidence, financial barriers to moving from welfare to work and lack of personal support during a process of change.

    Solution

The Passage helps clients to start to use their time usefully again by looking for employment and engaging in training and education activities. It helps clients to claim those benefits to which they are entitled in order and then k to properly claim transitional benefits on returning to work. They seek charitable support towards training, clothing and initial travel costs. Personal support is given to those going through a process of change through the mentoring scheme, provided by volunteers.
