Our theatre doesn't have the facilities it needs to develop or contribute fully to its deprived location. We need to rebuild the Grade 2* theatre's stage house, which burnt down in 1972, add a community theatre and other facilities necessary to rejuvenate the theatre and benefit the local area.

    Situation

The NTR isn’t financially viable and current facilities don’t allow us to improve this, which affects what we can offer the locality, which is one of the most deprived areas of the UK. Our stage is a temporary thrust stage, we have no storage space and our disabled provision is basic. Due to a lack of space, our youth groups have to move when a touring company is in,which limits what they can do. We cannot host dance workshops at all. Our offer is severely hampered by these issues.

    Solution

We will increase seat numbers and reconstruct the stage, orchestra pit, fly tower and dressing rooms. We will build a new 150 seat community theatre and education space to resolve current limitations on rehearsals and youth groups, and maximise our outreach and educational programme and our access provision. Also, we will be able to house the best touring companies and begin independent production. This will improve our financial viability and our arts and social offer in the local area.
