Bluebell Railway Northern Extension Project

Connect to the mainline at East Grinstead. This will make us easily accessible by rail from London and more open to those reliant on public transport. Linking with East Grinstead will open the Town to increased tourism, and encourage volunteers – the very essence of sustainable development.

Situation

We have already extended the Railway from 5 to 9 miles in length. Blocking the last mile is a domestic waste dump in Imberhorne cutting. We have been digging for three years and by January 2012, with 60,000 tonnes removed, there will be just 20,000 tonnes left to dig out. This must be done by 1 April 2012 when landfill tax applies, tripling our costs. The Railway will have exhausted all its funds by Christmas. All permissions are in place; there is no other barrier except funding.

Solution

Clearance of the cutting will enable joining of the two rail heads and allow us to complete the next phase (track and signalling) in 2012, ideally for the London Olympics. We will create new opportunities to add to our 700 volunteers and the new northern terminus will provide a clear end destination for visitors. We will partner with Southern Rail, East Grinstead Town Council and local businesses and charities to build a coordinated, enhanced visitor experience accessible to all.
