    Situation

Wilms tumour is a relatively common and treatable kidney cancer with 85% survival rates in high income countries. Survival rates in low income countries are much lower, at around 30% in centres where treatment is possible. Twinning initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa have produced considerable progress over the last few years in the treatment of Wilms tumour but specific challenges remain including late presentation, malnutrition, lack of supportive care facilities and abandonment of treatment.

    Solution

This project will implement a new standardised treatment protocol which will increase survival rates and reduce abandonment of treatment across the 5 centres. A reliable patient database will be established and database managers funded to measure outcomes, patients will be provided with travel assistance and nutritional support. Regional ultrasonography training and regular pathology meetings will increase the capacity of the local staff for making accurate diagnosis of Wilms tumour.
