The Nottingham Playhouse Youth Theatre (NPYT) will make a positive difference to the lives of young people in Nottingham, and to the future of the Playhouse. We want to give more young people in Nottingham the opportunity to take part in a safe, empowering, challenging youth theatre of excellence.

    Situation

Reduction in local authority funding has threatened the future of NPYT (a vital strand of our local education provision). NPYT supports the performers, technical teams and audiences of tomorrow. It gives young people unique access to a key regional theatre and contributes to personal development: building confidence and strengthening life skills. NPYT gives Nottingham youngsters their only opportunity, locally, to work closely with high quality artists and professional theatre practitioners.

    Solution

We will offer free taster workshops for young people aged 13–18, promoted in schools and youth organisations. We will run 4 NPYT groups (for 25 young people each) teaching theatre skills and production techniques. Master-classes will be led by Playhouse staff. Participants will audition to take part in a full stage production in April 2011. Fundraising income will support professional production costs and will help to subsidise NPYT places for those young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
