Sarnelli House is a group of orphanages for over 200 children who are HIV positive or have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. They are near Nong Khai in North East Thailand. One of the biggest costs in running the project is feeding the children. This project would help them move towards self-sufficiency.

    Situation

Food costs are increasing, with the price of rice, a staple food in Thailand, at an historic high. With over 200 children to feed daily this is a constant worry at Sarnelli House. HIV+ children need a nutritionally balanced diet to keep them fit and healthy. Only healthy children can attend school and receive an education. There are also some children who have missed a lot of schooling and have special needs as a result of the HIV virus, who will need ongoing support throughout their lives.

    Solution

Sarnelli House already produce some rice and fish. This project will purchase additional land which will then be used to produce more rice, providing 7 months supply overall each year for Sarnelli House. It will also provide more fishponds, space for a chicken rearing operation, a separate egg production facility, and room for pig rearing. It will also provide a mushroom hut, which could be used for consumption and sale. It would also provide employment for the children with special needs.
