Great directors acknowledge that you learn to direct by directing but for young directors opportunities to do so are extremely scarce. The JMK Award provides a rare and extremely valuable opportunity – the chance for a young director to direct their own production with lots of support and advice.
It ran from 10:00 AM, 5 December 2011 to 4:00 PM, 22 December 2011

There are very few opportunities for young theatre directors to get the chance to direct their own production. For many the transition from working as an assistant director to working as a director in their own right is difficult to achieve. Without the opportunity to direct their own work they cannot fully learn how to do the job. The JMK Award gives one young director the chance to direct their own production with the freedom to make their own decisions and learn through this experience.
The JMK Award gives young directors an opportunity to learn through a rigorous three-stage application process, which involves going through all the stages that are needed to mount a production. The Award is given to one outstanding individual. They are given a cash prize with which to direct their own production at the Young Vic. This is a unique opportunity and is the only Award, which gives the winner the chance to mount their own fully resourced production at an important London venue.
The Award gave me the opportunity to do the job for first time; an opportunity I couldn’t get anywhere else.
I only wish there were more opportunities like this one for the breadth of talented people.
This award provides the opportunity to direct by giving the two things a young director doesn’t have – a space and money.
