    Situation

The South Sudan primary schools rely almost completely on untrained teachers. 1. Less than five per cent of primary school teachers have a full teaching qualification and many have no formal training at all. 2.A high percentage of primary school teachers lack adequate English language skills to teach effectively in the classroom as they were educated in an Arabic medium environment. Also less than 10% of primary school teachers are female and this project will prioritise female teachers

    Solution

Working with the government of South Sudan Windle will: - provide formal teacher training to 83 teachers in Western Bahr el Ghazal (WBG) State, a pilot for inservice teacher training - train 50 tutors to be deployed in 6 States of South Sudan to upgrade the English and teaching skills of 1000 teachers. By targeting female teachers particularly the project will help to increase the proportion of female trained teachers by encouraging retention of female teachers in the profession..
