In January 2010 Spear is launching two new satellite centres in West London to provide an outreach service to unemployed young people in some of the most deprived areas of West London. This new model will ensure that the key life skills that young people need are provided in their community.

Situation
With 1 million young people now considered NEET (not in employment, education or training) in the UK and this group worst affected by the current recession, there is a crisis of underachievement caused by factors such as the absence of motivation to consider opportunities, confidence, life skills, and job search skills; and the need for information advice and guidance, qualifications and opportunity.
Solution
Spear is a six week pre-employment coaching programme for 16-24 year old NEETs addressing key life skills, career planning and offering qualifications. Each young person is also offered a one week unpaid work placement in their chosen field to give them exposure, skills and knowledge to achieve success in subsequent interviews. From September 2010 Spear will also be setting up a social business, SpearHead, that will provide job opportunities to Spear graduates in local businesses.
