    Situation

The creative sector is critical to Cornwall’s economy, but there is a skills shortage and so recruitment difficulties due to a lack of applicant experience. There is a also a significant lack of paid employment opportunities in the sector, particularly for people aged 16-24 with consequences for their future employment prospects. This environment has prompted a flight of young creative talent out of the county seeking experience and opportunities, and a loss of creative capacity in our region.

    Solution

The establishment of a placement structure integral to the core work of the gallery offering meaningful paid work, will create an ongoing offer to young people to gain critical experience in a well respected arts organisation. They will leave us with invaluable information about the varied aspects of the sector from arts admin to curatorial decision making, an excellent point on their CV, an enhanced knowledge of Cornwall’s creative sector, and better able to create their own opportunities.
