Situation
There are currently around 2,200 prisoners of conscience in prison in Burma, many serving unbelievably long sentences in extremely harsh conditions. Torture and ill treatment is a well documented part of their imprisonment and punishment. The families of the prisoners often live a precarious existence with conditions deteriorating day by day. The prisoner is often the breadwinner of the family, which is left destitute when they are imprisoned.
Solution
To provide relief grants to allow families to be able to travel to visit their loved ones in prison and take them essential food and medicines.
The prisoners are appreciative of the help they receive, and are encouraged to continue their political activities, knowing they have outside support.
