Furthering Talent helps musically talented children from low income families fulfil their potential, ensuring that when state funding runs out they don't lose the opportunity to play an instrument. It's a key programme in our Ambition 1000 campaign to support 1000 young musicians every year.

    Situation

The problem is a major gap in provision in the music education system. The state's first access programme at primary school currently funds all young people for up to one year's free instrumental tuition in a whole class group: however after this there's no guarantee that those with musical potential can continue to play if schools and parents don't have the funds. FT makes an intervention at exactly this point.

    Solution

We identify talented Year 6 students from low income families, giving them an inspiring opportunity to build on their potential, helping them make considerable progress in their instrumental playing, impacting positively on their confidence and motivation, whilst broadening and enriching their musical knowledge. This is delivered through individual tuition (in any genre) from an instrumental music teacher, plus broader support for their musical progression, both for at least two school years.
