Research shows that many families suffer financial hardship as a direct result of the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness. Often the patient is too ill and the family too burdened by the responsibility of caring to gain access to help. Isabel Hospice's project aims to alleviate this problem.

    Situation

Isabel Hospice's project aims to ensure that all our patients, their families and carers, are able to access the financial support to which they are entitled. Macmillan Cancer Support carried out research in 2012 which shows that 83% of people with cancer are on average £570 per month worse off. Many families struggle financially and find the benefits system complicated and difficult to access, particularly at a time when they are at their most vulnerable.

    Solution

By working in partnership with East Herts Citizens Advice Service (EHCAS) Isabel Hospice is able to deliver a 'kite marked' service from a CAB trained adviser who is able to see patients and families at the location which is most suitable for them, so making the service more accessible. This may include their own home (including residential homes), at our Day Services or at our In-Patient Unit. This service is on going and families are supported into bereavement
