In 2006 iDE UK established our first project in Ethiopia working with 80 farmers to dramatically increase their incomes. We are now working with over 50,000. Support iDE UK to expand our work even further in Ethiopia to help poor family farmers to lift themselves out of poverty.

    Situation

Ethiopia is a country of smallholder family farmers. Most subsist on low-yielding rain-fed crops which are barely enough to feed their family. When the rain fails the families lose their crops and often have to resort to emergency food aid. iDE UK is changing this tragic situation by introducing the farmers to small-scale irrigated farming using locally made water pumps and training the farmers in growing high-value dry season crops they can sell in the market and earn new income.

    Solution

Our sustainable approach to family farming in Ethiopia works. Last year the farmers in iDE UK programmes increased their incomes on average by £182. This is a huge increase in such a poor country. We help farmers access the tools and knowledge they need to grow high value crops such as fruit and vegetables. They sell these in the local market and generate cash income. We work with local businesses to make and sell irrigation tools as sustainable local enterprises.
