We want to enable every one of our pupils and young people to have access to Eyegaze technology. Using eye movement alone, young people with complex physical needs and limited communication will be able to use computers, unlocking their potential to learn and interact with the world around them.

Situation

Every young person we support has complex physical needs. All use wheelchairs at least some of the time, struggle with fine motor skills like controlling a computer mouse and have limited verbal communication. These challenges can be extremely frustrating and isolating. With ‘Eyegaze’ technology, young people can use eye movement to control a computer screen, helping them to learn and communicate. However, we don’t currently have enough to meet the needs of all our young people.

Solution

Providing Eyegaze computers in all our classrooms and residential bungalows will open up a world of opportunities for our young people, enabling them to take control of their computer screen using eye movement alone. With this empowering resource, they will be able to do anything that could usually be done by controlling a mouse and much more. This could include using online learning activities, sending a text message or even controlling a TV remote control.
