This project will engage teachers, pupils and parents, ensuring that 10,604 children at 15 Ugandan primary schools get the best start to their educational journey. As a result, fewer children will be repeating the early years’ classes, and more will be passing P3 literacy and numeracy tests.

    Situation

When a child first goes to school, a poor learning culture can prevent them from doing well. Only a third of children in Uganda are able to read and comprehend a basic sentence by P3 and 19% of children repeat the first few years. This is caused by lack of support in and out of school; teachers are poorly equipped to deal with early education, only 25% of parents actively support learning at home, and child well-being is low with high percentages of bullying. These are key failures in learning.

    Solution

We will work with teachers, parents and pupils to ensure the youngest children acquire the skills they need to do well in school, and in life. Teachers will be inspired to deliver child-friendly and good quality teaching, engaging children in class. Parents will be equipped with the resources to create a positive learning experience at home. Younger children will feel supported by older ‘buddies’, reducing instances of bullying. Children will have a positive start to their educational journey.
