The state of Sabah in Borneo is rich in amazing wildlife, but these animals are more at threat than ever. Our rangers on the Wildlife Rescue Unit are essential in making sure orangutans and other wildlife in need of help are rescued and given the care and attention for them to survive.

    Situation

The Sabah Wildlife Department’s Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) was established in May 2010 in response to the increasing need to rescue and translocate injured or displaced animals in Sabah. The human population of Sabah has increased 390% in the last 40 years and threats such as deforestation and climate change are forcing animals closer to people and into more dangerous situations. These animals need to be rescued and relocated to safe, protected areas if they are to survive.

    Solution

Injured or orphaned baby animals are rescued, treated and rehabilitated at Centres such as Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, and are released back into protected rainforest reserves once it is deemed that they are able to survive in the wild. The WRU rangers are there every step of the way, providing reliable transport to rescue and release sites, keeping the local population safe and giving the best quality of care to animals who need treatment and rehabilitation.
